CDU First Nations design/branding competition

Submit your original design for a chance to be featured on CDU branding and promotional materials 

This is your chance to help CDU reflect its commitment to being the university for First Nations students and its pride in being the Territory’s University. It’s a great opportunity to celebrate First Nations culture and identity. 

Are you a First Nations student with a passion for art and creativity? You are invited to submit an original design for a chance to be featured on some of CDU’s communications, media and promotional materials. The winner will receive $500 and a fixed-term agreement to license the chosen design.

This competition is open to all current CDU First Nations students and you can submit as many works as you like.  

Design and submission guidelines

Requirements of the submission

  • You must be enrolled as a student at CDU.
  • The design needs to be able to be reproduced and reprinted, so we are seeking submissions that are paintings, drawings or prints. 
  • Design must be an original creation and must not infringe on the intellectual property of another person.
  • The artist accepts that the design may be reproduced in full or in part, pending design preferences and the requirements of the material on which it will be featured.
  • The artist accepts that when the design is reproduced, colours may be modified in the print process. 
  • The creator of the design will be credited in full.

Winning prize

The winner will receive an initial prize of $500.00.

Additionally, the winner will be entitled to receive an annual fee for a fixed period in accordance with a separate licence agreement to be entered between the winner and CDU after the winner has been determined. The licence agreement will detail arrangements in respect of CDU’s use of the winner’s work. 

The winner will be announced the week commencing Monday 17 June, 2024 by the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor First Nations Leadership, and First Nations Student Engagement.  

Submission guidelines

  • Hard copy originals should be scanned or photographed and saved as a high-resolution .tiff or .jpg file. Cameras should be set to the highest quality/resolution.
  • Entrants creating electronic art should provide a high resolution .tiff for photographic images or .eps for vector designs.

How to submit your design

  • Send a high-resolution digital image of your design to firstnationsgovernance@cdu.edu.au
  • Include your name, CDU student number, contact information, design work title and a brief description of the design
  • All designs must be original, not previously exhibited and not currently under examination.

Terms and conditions

Introduction

A. The CDU First Nations design/branding competition (‘the Competition’) is being run by CDU through its First Nations Leadership and Engagement team.

B. By entering in the Competition participants agree that they have read and accept these terms and conditions.

C. Entries must comply with these terms and conditions to be valid.

Eligibility to enter the Competition

The Competition is open to all current CDU students of all ages who identify as First Nations peoples. CDU staff members including CDU students who are also CDU staff members are not eligible to enter the Competition. 

Participants under the age of 18 must seek permission from their parent or guardian to enter. If the winner of the prize is under 18 years of age, the prize will be awarded to the winner’s parent or legal guardian whilst the winner remains under 18 years of age. 

By entering the Competition, participants confirm that they are eligible to do so and that they (or their parent or guardian as applicable) are eligible to receive any prizes that may be awarded. 

There is no limit on the number of submissions a participant may submit and the Competition is free to enter.

How to enter the Competition

The Competition opens 9.00 am ACST, Monday 22 April 2024. To enter the Competition, participants must submit a piece of work in accordance with the Submission Requirements set out below by 5.00 pm ACST, Friday 24 May 2024 (the Submission Deadline).

Entries will be deemed to be accepted at the time of receipt and not at the time of transmission.

CDU reserves the right, at any time, to request verification of the age, identity, residential address, or any other information relevant to participation in the Competition of all participants. CDU reserves the right to disqualify any participant who provides false information or fails to provide information that is reasonably requested by CDU.

CDU reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to refuse to accept entries which are incomplete, indecipherable, offensive, do not comply with these terms and conditions or which contravene any applicable laws or regulations.

CDU reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify any participant who has breached any of these terms and conditions, has engaged in unlawful or improper conduct or otherwise acts to cheat or undermine the fairness of the Competition by, for example, tampering with, or using or exploiting errors in, the entry process to obtain a competitive advantage over other participants.

The eligibility of entries is solely within the discretion of CDU.

CDU accepts no responsibility for late, lost, misdirected or damaged entries or other communications.

Submission requirements

Each submission must be: 

  • an original creation by the participant that does not infringe the intellectual property rights of another person.
  • produced in a format that can be reproduced and distributed. 
  • able to be modified and adapted in part or in full. 
  • submitted via email to firstnationsgovernance@cdu.edu.au by the Submission Deadline and include the participant’s name, CDU student ID number, phone number, email address, residential address, title of the work and a brief description of the work.
  • not previously exhibited or under current examination. 

An entry cannot be modified after it has been submitted. 

The prize

The winning prize will be an initial payment of $500.00.

Additionally, the winner will be entitled to receive an annual fee for a fixed period in accordance with a separate licence agreement to be entered between the winner and CDU after the winner has been determined. The licence agreement will detail arrangements in respect of CDU’s use of the winner’s work.

The prize is not transferrable or exchangeable.

All taxes (excluding GST, if any) which may be payable as a consequence of receiving the prize are the sole responsibility of the winner.

A winner’s use of the prize is entirely at their own risk. CDU takes no responsibility for the prize being lost or stolen or otherwise forfeited. The winner agrees to release CDU from and indemnify CDU against any liability arising from the winner’s acceptance of the prize and the winner’s participation in the Competition.

CDU reserve the right to substitute a prize of equal or greater value if circumstances beyond CDU control require doing so.

CDU's decision on any aspect of the Competition is final and binding, and no correspondence will be entered into about it.

How the winner is determined

All entries will be judged by a judging panel consisting of:

  • the Vice-Chancellor
  • the Deputy Vice-Chancellor First Nations Leadership and Engagement
  • the Vice-President Global and External Relations
  • the Art Room Supervisor and Senior Graphic Designer.

The winner will be announced publicly by the Vice Chancellor, the Deputy Vice Chancellor First Nations Leadership, and First Nations Student Engagement in the week commencing Monday 17 June 2024.

Notification and claiming the prize

CDU will provide the winner with instructions on how to claim their prize. It is the responsibility of the winner to comply with CDU’s instructions. 

CDU reserves the right to request the winner to provide proof of their identity and/or proof that they were responsible for the winning entry. 

It is the responsibility of each participant to notify CDU of any change to their contact details.

Unclaimed prizes

CDU will take all reasonable steps to identify and notify the winner. However, if the winner does not claim their prize within one month of the date on which the winner is determined, the prize will be forfeited and will be awarded to the next best entry. 

Limitation of liability

CDU shall not be liable and excludes all liability (including negligence) for any loss or damage whatsoever which is suffered (including but not limited to indirect or consequential loss) for damage to property, personal injury or death suffered or sustained in connection with the Competition or the use or taking of the prize except for any liability which cannot be lawfully excluded.

Data protection and publicity

Participants acknowledge and agree that any personal information provided when entering the Competition will be used by CDU for the purposes of administering the Competition and will be dealt with in accordance with CDU’s Privacy and Confidentiality policy and any other applicable CDU policies. 

The winner agrees to participate and co-operate, as required in all publicity activities relating to the Competition, including, without limitation, being interviewed, photographed, filmed, and recorded. The winner authorises CDU to use such content for CDU’s operational purposes in any media in perpetuity worldwide. 

Intellectual property

Arrangements governing ownership and use of the winner’s intellectual property will be documented in a separate licence agreement to be entered into between CDU and the winner. 

General

CDU reserves the right, at any time and without prior notice, to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Competition, or amend these terms and conditions.
