Born and raised in a small village in Sri Lanka, Thisari was encouraged by her family to pursue a career in science. However, after completing a Bachelor of Biological Science, she set out to pursue a passion of her own: information technology.

Thisari has been interested in technology from a very young age. She used to help her father with the family business computer. When researching postgraduate degrees in Australia, CDU’s Master of Information Technology (Information Systems and Data Science) was just what she had been looking for.

I found CDU has low student-to-teacher ratio which means lecturers can focus on each student due to smaller class sizes. Most importantly, CDU is among top universities for postgraduate full-time employment.

Drawn to the Top End

Thisari was intrigued by the Northern Territory. She loves learning about different cultures and exploring unique historic destinations.

As a person who admires different cultures, I found that the NT is a paradise for multiculturalism.

When comparing universities in Australia, CDU stood out.

CDU is among the top universities for postgraduate full-time employment. Finding these important facts made me choose CDU as my study destination and now I’m reaping the rewards of it.

To help prepare international students for the Australian workplace, CDU Career’s Centre offer year-round support, resources and advice.

Thisari recently took part in the AWEsome Program which offers international students the opportunity to have an in-person Australian workplace experience to learn about Australian workplace cultures, establish professional networks and gain valuable hands-on experience outside the classroom.

Australian work culture is totally different from my home country. So, I thought this is going to be a good practice for my future career.

The program included 10 employability development seminars for students covering topics such as writing resumes and cover letters, how to address selection criteria, workplace small talk and a mock interview, all aimed to assist students in the process of moving from the classroom to the workplace.

I have the foundation to work in an Australian work environment thanks to the AWEsome Program.

Take advantage of every opportunity

Thisari encourages other students to take advantage of the opportunities offered by CDU.

Take every opportunity: CDU has many. Start working today. Sometimes the opportunity you have taken may be not related to what you are studying! Just take it and work hard! Your honest, hard work will end up achieving your goals.
