Sami Azam is currently the Senior Lecturer and the Undergraduate Course Coordinator at the Faculty of Science and Techology at Charles Darwin University. He holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering and his PhD research was on the detection of binaural processing in the human brain.

Dr Sami Azam has worked to improve the understanding of the connection between the ears and brain, to assist with the detection of hearing disorders caused by a common ear infection found in children the world over.

Dr Azam has been constantly producing high-quality research and scholarly works at both national and international conferences as well as journals. The body of works comprises scholarly journal articles and conference proceedings as well as book chapters. He is very active in conducting multidisciplinary research.

His research expertise includes machine learning, artificial intelligence, deep learning, advanced signal processing and image analysis. Applications include the classification, detection and modelling of a biosignals, such as electroencephalogram (EEG), electrocardiogram (ECG), and acceleration plethysmogram (APG) as well as medical image analysis for early diagnosis of disease. He has also applied machine learning and other artificial intelligence techniques to detect and classify a range of data security and IoT threats. He is a key member of the Biomedical Engineering and Health Informatics research group at Charles Darwin University and is a long-term resident of the Northern Territory.

Dr Azam has successfully secured several competitive grants from external agencies and internally from CDU. He has also been a presenter in workshops and seminars on state-of-the-art research ideas and grant propositions and served as a program committee member for various conferences.

Dr Azam is an active member of several professional organisations: AISA, AAEE, ACS and IEEE and currently working as IEEE NT Student Activities Chair.
