Overview
This course is suitable for people who would like to learn how to safely use and maintain a chainsaw. It covers the following:
- Operational maintenance of chainsaws
- Chain selection and sharpening
- Select and use required PPE
- Cutting techniques for felled timber

Fee exemptions
Exemptions apply to TAFE tuition fees for NTG supported courses only.

- Permanent residents with refugee or humanitarian status
Certified copy of the evidence must be provided at the time of enrolment.

Entry requirements
Admission criteria
To ensure you have the right skills and support to succeed in your course, a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LL&N) evaluation helps identify any areas where you may need additional support to help you achieve your goals.
To gain entry into VTP511 Operate and Maintain Chainsaws, candidates are required to:
- be 16 years or older and physically capable of using a chainsaw; and
- not be attending secondary school; and
- be able to demonstrate appropriate language, literacy, and numeracy skills and knowledge to undertake this course. This is demonstrated if you have completed a qualification deemed equivalent to an Australian Year 11 or higher, Australian Certificate III or higher, or by completing a Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) assessment.
- You must complete AHCMOM213 Operate and maintain chainsaws and FWPCOT2273 Trim and cut felled trees before completing FWPCOT2274 Fell trees manually (basic).
