The CDU Employment-Based Placement (EBP) program offers a unique opportunity for final-year pre-service teachers to integrate their professional teaching roles with site-based placement. This model enhances practical experience, supports career readiness, and produces job-ready early career teachers who are prepared to meet the diverse needs of schools and communities.

The EBP program is built on collaboration between CDU's WIL Education team and key stakeholders, including:

  • Pre-service teachers
  • Host schools
  • Education governance authorities and jurisdictions
  • State and Territory teacher registration bodies

Program overview

EBP enables pre-service teachers—already employed in teaching roles under an alternative authorisation (e.g., Special Authority to Teach, Permission to Teach)—to complete their final professional experience placement within their current employment setting.

The placement can be undertaken full-time or part-time, provided all requirements are met:

  • Completion of the mandated number of placement days
  • Fulfilment of Professional Experience Placement Unit requirements
  • Demonstration of the Australian Professional Standards for Graduate Teachers (AFGT)
  • Successful completion and submission of both interim and final professional experience reports

Pre-service teachers accepted into an EBP are supported by:

  • A school-appointed mentor
  • A CDU Professional Experience Supervisor

Eligibility criteria

To qualify for the EBP program, applicants must:

  • Be in their final year of study with no more than four units remaining
  • Not yet have completed their final professional experience placement unit
  • Be employed in a teaching role aligned with their course requirements
  • Have completed or be currently enrolled in LANTITE

Application process

The EBP application process occurs in two stages:

Stage 1: Expression of Interest (EOI)

Stage 2: Employment-Based Placement Application

  • Confirms alignment with course and accreditation requirements
  • Verification of employment status, placement requirements, and valid authority to teach.
  • Placement details, confirming where and in what capacity you will be teaching
  • Access to the full application is granted after eligibility confirmation by CDU WIL Professional Experience Supervisors and approval by the Associate Dean WIL
  • Email profx.team@cdu.edu.au for more information

Getting started

Initial inquiries should be directed to WIL Placement Officers or Professional Experience Supervisors.

  • Pre-service teachers with a nationally recognised authority to teach will receive the Stage 1 Expression of Interest Information Document and application link.
  • In the Northern Territory (NT), pre-service teachers may be nominated by the Department of Education NT for the Accelerated Classroom Teacher Practice Program. For more information: Accelerated Classroom Teacher Practice Program | Teach in the Territory
