Blackboard Collaborate Ultra is the web conferencing tool that powers CDU’s online classrooms. Blackboard Collaborate allows staff and students to engage in a range of learning and teaching activities, using the following key features:

  • share audio and video
  • use telephony is a session
  • text chat
  • interactive whiteboard
  • view shared files and applications
  • polling
  • participate in breakout rooms
  • download session recording.

  • There are a few things you need to participate in an online classroom session, check you have the requirements before your first session for a positive online classroom experience:

  • Staff and students can participate in an Ultra online classroom on mobile device with a supported operating system, mobile web browser and Blackboard app:

    • iOS 12+ & Safari browser
    • Android 9+ & Chrome browser.

    Participate in on online classroom session on your mobile device.

    Join session from a Learnline unit:

    1. Open the Blackboard app and search for the full name of your institution - Charles Darwin University.
    2. Log in with your CDU username and password. These are typically the same credentials you use to access your Learnline units on a computer.
    3. Select the unit and link to the Collaborate online classroom.
    4. Tap an available session (or Course room if advised) and it will launch in your mobile web browser.

    Join session from a link:

    1. If you are provided a link to the session, access the link, tap it and the session will launch in your mobile web browser.

    Participants using the mobile apps can:

    • communicate with moderators and other participants via chat and audio
    • raise their hand for questions and comments
    • view all users in the participants panel
    • view live video
    • write on the whiteboard
    • view shared files and applications
    • participate in breakout groups (nb. presenter role is not automatically granted)
  • To provide the best possible online classroom experience:

    • Attend your first session early to setup your audio - on entry to a session you may be prompted to allow your browser to access your microphone and camera.  Even if you don’t plan to speak, you need to give your browser permission to access your microphone to hear others in a session.
    • Communicate with the session moderator if having technical difficulties or view the Blackboard Help Troubleshooting page.
    • Don't run other applications or have downloads happening while attending a session as this will show your connection speed.
    • Raise your hand when you have a question or a comment.
    • Click the audio icon in the Interaction bar to share audio, use only while talking.
    • Use chat to send messages to everyone in the session.
    • Add a profile picture so others can see you, if not intending to share video.
    • Practice netiquette.
    • Remember to use earphones and microphone when using the mobile application.
