Prof Jeremy Russell-Smith is the Research Director of the Darwin Centre for Bushfire Research (DCBR) and an Adjunct Professor at Charles Darwin University (CDU).
The DCBR has been based at CDU for the past 13 years. The team has developed a number of research programs and tools to aid in improved fire management and provide income through ecosystem services. The DCBR’s research is based on the connection between extensive field data describing the impacts of fire on north Australian vegetation, and remotely sensed mapping of fire and habitats, which has led to some useful tools for land managers across northern Australia.
Jeremy has led the Bushfire Research team since 1997, first as part of Bushfires NT and then after its move to CDU in 2013. He has a robust botanical and fire ecological background and a great wish to improve fire management, the environment and the livelihoods of Indigenous peoples. In the seminar ‘Improved fire management and ecosystem services’, Jeremy will briefly outline some of the key parts of this work.
He will also introduce DCBR team members who will speak more about this work, including Jay Evans, Dr Sofia Oliveira, Dr Cameron Yates, Hafsa Nipa, Dr Andrew Edwards, Assoc Prof Kamaljit Sangha, and Dr Hari Paramjyoti.
