Policy levers for recruitment & retention of health professionals: evidence (or lack thereof) through a gender lens
Abstract
Health workforces around the world are characterized by geographic maldistribution, which may lead to inequitable health service availability in rural and remote communities. While financial incentives are often raised as a potential policy lever to address imbalances, evidence on their effectiveness is limited. There is a specific void in the research literature and policy guidance on the gender effects of health workforce financing schemes. This seminar will highlight research findings, gaps, and opportunities from Canada on using population-based data sources to examine the intersections of rurality, gender, and wage differentials among healthcare professionals.
Presenter
Neeru Gupta is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of New Brunswick (Fredericton, Canada). She obtained her PhD in Demography at Université de Montréal. Her research interests lie in accelerating gender and social equity towards achieving the Quadruple Aim for healthcare improvement: better patient experiences, healthy populations, sustainable healthcare investments, and enhanced work-life of providers.
