Dr Kirsti Abbott is Head of Science at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT), and is also an adjunct member of the Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods (RIEL) at CDU.
MAGNT operates seven sites across the NT and cares for objects, artefacts and specimens across 12 collections. The Natural and Earth Science collections – zoology, palaeontology and geology – represent material from the NT and our neighbours to the north, but also across Australia and the world. Collections are dynamic repositories of biodiversity data, and accessible for researchers, practitioners and educators.
In this talk, Kirsti will walk through MAGNT’s role in supporting biodiversity and conservation research and more – come and hear about how to access the collections for your research.
Kirsti is originally an ecologist and tropical entomologist whose work focused on invasive ants on islands, and has spent time in research, engagement, and science education and communication. She is passionate about creating and maintaining sustainable systems that support rigorous research in organisations like universities and museums.
Kirsti aims to understand what influences the value and impact of science and education, and to embed the doing of, and thinking about, science and nature in the everyday lives of Australians.

The AVISTEP tool: Giving birds a seat at the table for renewable energy planning
BirdLife Australia created the Australian AVISTEP – an online environmental planning tool using data collected by Birdata volunteers. AVISTEP identifies the birds affected by four different types of renewables infrastructure and their sensitivity to it across land and sea, and displays this information using an interactive heat map.

Completion Masterclass
This workshop is designed to assist research students who are close to completion to focus their efforts, deal with specific obstacles, increase writing productivity and maintain momentum. It will also assist students in prioritising and planning their final months.
