This classic Health Qigong - Five Animal Exercise draws inspiration from the natural rhythms of animals, by imitating the natural charm and movements of the five animals: tiger, deer, bear, ape and bird. The tiger form strengthens muscles and bones. The deer form unblocks meridians. The bear form nourishes the spleen and stomach. The ape form flexes joints and relaxes the tendons. The bird form balances breath.

This exercise traces back to the wisdom of Hua Tuo, the medical sage of the Eastern Han Dynasty. It can effectively relieve back soreness and body stiffness caused by prolonged sitting. Adjusting breathing with animal-like movements also helps reduce anxiety, calm the mind, make the body more flexible and improve concentration.

Our Tai Chi instructor, Mr Hanlin Lu, holds a Master of Physical Education degree from Anhui Normal University, majoring in Physical Education Teaching. Hanlin possesses extensive teaching experience, specialising in many tai chi forms, such as Yang-style and Chen-style Tai Chi, Five-Animal Frolics, as well as other forms of health qigong.
