Certain units at CDU have specific rules (requisites) or requirements.
Prerequisite rules units
Pre-requisites are conditions that you need to meet before being allowed to enrol in a specific unit.
Types of prerequisites
These are the following prerequisites in use at CDU:
Units
A prerequisite unit is a unit that must be successfully completed before you can enrol in a subsequent unit, e.g., MID120Supporting Physiological Pregnancy and Birth is a prerequisite for MID210Complex Pregnancy. Therefore, students must successfully complete MID120 before enrolling in MID210.
Credit Points (CP)
A specified number of credit points completed may also be included as a prerequisite requirement. (e.g., HCS261Fundamentals of Humanitarian Practice requires students to have completed 80 credit points prior to enrolling). This is usually to ensure that students complete units towards the end of their degree, to ensure they are set up for success.
GPA
A minimum GPA requirement is used across many units at CDU (e.g., LWA317Research Paper requires all students to have a minimum GPA of 5.2 prior to enrolling).
Specific Course
In addition, students can only enrol in certain units if they are in the correct course; e.g., NUR259Acute and Chronic Nursing is only available for enrolment to students enrolled in one of CDU's undergraduate nursing courses: WNUR01, WNUR02, WNURA1, WNURE1.
Assumed Knowledge
Assumed knowledge is knowledge or skills you are expected to have before enrolling in a unit, based on prior study. Unlike a prerequisite, assumed knowledge is not mandatory for enrolment, but is strongly advised for success.
What will happen if I fail the prerequisite?
If you fail a prerequisite unit we will automatically change your future unit to 'Invalid' in MyStudentInfo, instead of 'Enrolled'.
We will email you to let you know we have changed your enrolment and what steps you need to take. In most cases, we will withdraw you from your future unit and provide unit enrolment advice.
Study load
Your study load will depend on your course's study plan.
Full Time versus Part Time
A full time student is enrolled in at least 30 credit points per semester. Any enrolment less than this is considered a part-time enrolment. Your course may have recommended study plans for both full time and part time students that you should follow.
International students on a student visa are expected to complete their studies by the end date listed on your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). For these reasons, it is very important to remain enrolled on a full-time basis or as per your approved study plan.
Overload
An overload occurs when you request to enrol in additional credit points in a teaching period that exceeds the maximum credit points set for that teaching period. In Semesters 1 and 2 and the Summer Semester, the maximum credit points a student can enrol in is normally 40. If a student overloads their enrolment, they will be able to enrol in up to 50 credit points for that semester.
To be eligible for an overload, you must have completed a minimum of 40 credit points and have a GPA of at least 5.0 in your current course.
Outstanding Grades
An Outstanding Grade (also known as an Incomplete Grade) is a temporary notation indicating that a grade is not yet complete.
If you have an Outstanding Grade, you may be unable to enrol in your next unit(s). In addition, any student with an Outstanding Grade is unable to course transfer or go on intermission.
Please visit the University's grades page for more information.
Types of Outstanding Grades
PO - Placement (Practicum) Ongoing: When a student has commenced the unit but not yet completed the practicum or placement component. The grade will be applicable for 12 months, and if not completed within that time, will convert to a fail.
AC - Assessment Continues: When a written extension has been approved by the relevant Faculty Dean (for up to three months).
SPEC - Alternate Examination Sitting Approved: When a student has been approved to sit an alternate examination due to meeting certain criteria.
