Academic dress

Students participating in the ceremony are required to wear academic dress. Academic dress is made up of three parts; the gown, the hood or stole and the trencher.

  • The hire of academic dress incurs the following fees dependant on the award you are graduating with:

  • The academic dress to which a person is entitled is that described in the section referring in its heading to the person, or as the case requires, the person’s degree or other award.
    The persons entitled to academic dress in accordance with these rules are:

    • the Chancellor
    • the Deputy Chancellor
    • the Vice-Chancellor
    • other members of Council

    Persons holding any of the following degrees or other awards of the university:

    • a degree of Doctor (Other than degree of Doctor of Philosophy)
    • a degree of Doctor of Philosophy
    • a degree of Master
    • a degree of Bachelor, Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma
    • a Diploma / Advanced Diploma / Associate Degree
    • an Associate Diploma / Certificate IV / Advanced Certificate
    • a Certificate I, II or III
    • a Companion of the University
    • an Indigenous Graduate
  • Gown of charcoal-grey, cool wool with scarlet facings down each side in the front, and a long, pointed collar at the back.

    The facings and collar are trimmed on the outer-side with a double row of gold and black braid.

    The sleeves are trimmed around the arm slit with gold braid, and the base of the sleeves is trimmed with a band of scarlet and three bands of gold braid. Above this, the University insignia is embroidered in gold.

  • Gown of charcoal-grey, cool wool in the same style as the Chancellor’s gown, with plain, charcoal facings down each side in the front, and a long, pointed collar at the back.

    The facings and collar are trimmed on the outer-side with a double row of scarlet and gold braid.

    The sleeves are trimmed around the arm slit with gold braid, and the base of the sleeves is trimmed with a band of scarlet with one band of gold. Above this, the University insignia is embroidered in gold.

  • The style of academic dress (if any) to which the member is entitled, or black poly-rayon gown of the Cambridge doctoral pattern with facings of scarlet and white and sleeve linings of scarlet.

  • Festal gown of scarlet cloth of the Cambridge doctoral pattern with 10cm facings and sleeve linings of the relevant award colour specified below.

    For the award of Doctor of the University, the 10cm facings and sleeve linings shall be white.

    Black velvet bonnet with silver cord and tassel. Hood of scarlet cloth of the Cambridge pattern lined with silk of the relevant award colour specified in rule 14.

    For the award of Doctor of the University, the hood shall be lined in white, edged with white silk 3 cm wide, adjacent to black silk 2 cm wide, scarlet silk 3 cm wide, then black silk 2 cm wide (so that the 3 cm white strip is the outer edge of the hood).

  • Festal gown of claret stuff-cloth of the Cambridge doctoral pattern faced with cream silk 10cm wide.

  • Black poly rayon gown of the Cambridge masters pattern.

  • In addition to the academic dress relating to the qualification being conferred; an additional half-length stole with an Indigenous motif can be worn.

  • Colours are allocated to groups of awards in cognate areas which form a broad field of study, as follows:
